Alsop on the Future of Television
I Want My File-Served TV!, writes Stewart Alsop (one of my favourite columnists) in Fortune, offering a compelling glimpse into TV's future:
Loose Coupling in Web Services
Jon Udell writes on Web services: "Web Services are a species of componentized software. As such, the usual design patterns apply. Components need well-specified interfaces, and they must be reusable. More so than most conventional components, however, Web services tackle business processes that are widely distributed both in time and space. The new design pattern that arises in response to this challenge is called loose coupling."

We will again be faced with the issues of P2P content licensing. Napster will be used as a precedent.
Though media companies will definitely follow this path, private video distribution over the net would probably be limited to sharing home videos between family and friends.

Posted by Clinton GoveasCheck out www.kazaa.com. similar or infact better than napster. It's a p2p software for all sorts of content.
Posted by PriyaInteresting article which makes sense.
But I would tend to differ with Clinton's comment that it would raise issues of content licensing. As it is right now, the parts which enable content piracy viz. PVRs, DIVX/MPEG, Kazaa etc. are in place. Therefore, what might happen is that before File-Served TV becomes the norm in a few years, the content producers will have figured out ways to charge for the content i.e. through time/use expired content format, pay-at-request-source etc. The File-Served TV which the article talks could just be a robust distribution system in place by that time.
Talking about distributed file sharing, what is notable in this regard is the Thick Server. P2P File sharing programs are an area of concern with companies faced with security and bandwidth hogging issues. The Thick Server-Thin Client architechture is an excellent solution for application management. It is a central repository of applications which can also be used to monitor and restrict installed applications and their use.
Posted by VeerChand BothraSo, if today most of a company's Leased Line bandwidth is being utilised by employees to download MP3s because it is difficult to restrict installed applications on every Desktop machine and/or to install firewall rules because they can be bypassed easily than the ThickServer proves to be a highly effective solution.
