Brazil: Metron's Linux PCs
From Forbes: "Metron's Linux line will sell for 20 percent less than those that use Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system. The cheapest model will sell for 1,899 reais ($476). Metron expects the new line to boost its sales by 10 percent this year. The company sold 200,000 computers last year, 70 percent of them for the Brazilian market. Metron has closed a deal to delivery 1,000 computers to local popular furniture chain stores Marabraz. Metron hopes to interest important consumer sellers like Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. too." Some stats about the LatAm computer market: "According to market researchers IDC, Brazil is the largest computer market in Latin America, accounting for 41.7 percent of the region's sales in 2001. Latin America and 6 percent of world computer sales." World PC sales are about 135 million, which makes LatAm about 8 million units, and Brazil about 3.3 million units, about double that of India.
