AOL's USD 299 PC Deal
WSJ writes about AOL's offer to provide a PC and printer for USD 299 to those who commit to its USD 23.90 service for a year. Comments John Robb: "It really does look like AOL is trying to change the model of the PC industry into something that looks closer to a combination of the game and telephone/cable businesses. Basically, give away at cost a loaded PC/printer configured to work optimally with AOL. Charge a monthly fee for services that include connectivity, communication tools, and content. Make it easier for customers to take advantage of existing premium features and content through preinstalled tool configuration. Create new upsale opportunities by extending itself into what is normally done in the PC world: anti-virus software services, firewall software services, PC repair services, and peripheral/software sales (that are optimized to work with the AOL PC)." Am wondering what variation of the service can work in India. I think one has to look at PCs for sub-Rs 7K (USD 150), which means they need to be thin clients, which means they will need broadband connectivity (at least 256 Kbps).

Indian Railways
Trains are one of my delights, especially in India. I don't get to make too many journeys nowadays, though. I was still especially interested to read this report in the Economist. The article looks at how the Indian Railways, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in April, needs to be reformed.
One of the good things that has happened is the online booking of tickets set up by a subsidiary, IRCTC. That offshoot has become the largest e-business in India.

I have always wondered if transportation system can totally be an economic infrastructure. I guess social and econominc considerations will always be inextricably entwined. India is not alone in this. I will not be surpised to find many trains taken off track in France if number of passengers were the only criterion. In Germany too Deutsche Bahn is struggling -- it has experimented with several revenue models. Social investments are necessary but that does not mean we waste or misallocate resources. Social investments can also be measured. The metrics can be non-financial . A simple metric could be how much does a social investment contribute in redistribution of wealth. To some extent this can be quantified as well . It is very much possible. Either run by government or private sector there is no excuse for inefficiency. Trains in Europe make me painfully aware of the time we waste in India. The age-old excuse -- the number of trains we run! I will not complain about Indian Railways being the largest employer in the world! Privatisation or remaining public is not the core of our problems. Privatisation induces competition and brings in performance measurement. Though it is entirely possible that in a monopolistic situation privatisation need not result in any of these. Indian Railways too has privatized many of its services-- the problems continue. One of the reasons being lack of a sound performance measurement system based on which the contracts can be renewed. I guess there too "social" considerations creep in! Posted by AmitabhThough this may be difficult to implement if the Indian Railways is used primarily for goods transportation it can be one of the most efficient transportation systems suitable for India. Since there will not be any human passengers it will greatly increase efficiency in time scheduling and management and reduce operational costs. It will also reduce heavy vehicle traffic on national and state highways thereby increasing the life of the road and decreasing cost of maintenance. Lesser trucks on the roads also translates into safety to passenger vihicles and increased comforts. It is just an idea that flashed to me but maybe it is a solution for India. Internet in Rural India
As part of an article on extending the Internet via the road, The Economist writes on an innovative idea to take the Internet to the masses in India:
From what I can understand, this is a project which began as part of Media Lab Asia, and is called DakNet. Here is more from an article recently in the Financial Express:

Open-Source Desktop Software
Jim Gettys has a nice overview of all the components and how they inter-relate. Here is the section on thin clients:
Adds HP's Martin Fink in a News.com interview: "Linux on the desktop is definitely an area where hype is ahead of reality by orders of magnitude. There's a sexiness around the idea of taking on Microsoft. The reality is that (desktop Linux) is still less than 2 percent of the market, but at the same time, we certify and sell a number of Linux desktop solutions. There are two areas of interest: the engineering desktop with folks like DreamWorks and Disney, and the application developer. We are certifying our notebooks with Linux, and the target there is big-time application developers. In the developing countries that don't have the Windows legacy--like India, China, Asia Pacific and the Eastern bloc--we see some pretty significant volume there."
Idea Markets
HBS Working Knowledge (Anil Kambil) writes that by gathering collective wisdom, idea markets can improve your forecasting, knowledge management, and decision making. The three steps that managers need to take to put an idea market into organizational practice are:
TECH TALK: My Mental Model: The Outline
As we think about possible solutions, it helps to have some simple models in which one can fit things in. As Charlie Munger of Berkshire Hathway said (Outstanding Investor Digest, December 29, 1997 – my thanks to Chetan Parikh for pointing this out):
It is very hard to do what Charlie Munger says. That is why there is only one Berkshire Hathway, only one Warren Buffet, and only one Charlie Munger. What I've tried to do is to evolve a few basic principles for my work life (of which this writing is a key part of). These have evolved slowly over the past couple of years, and are probably evident in much of the Tech Talk writings. What I want to do in this series is to distill out the key elements of my thinking so that the context of what I write here and on my weblog becomes clearer. This also gives a framework on how to think about possible solutions on the two sets of problems of SME growth and rural transformation. So, here is my thinking in one sentence: Creating disruptive innovations for the bottom of the pyramid requires ecosystems of integrated solutions with local distribution to bridge divides. The words are not as complicated as they seem! Over the coming columns, I will explain each of the phrases I have used here in detail. Individually, they may mean a little. Taken together, they present – I think – a rich array of opportunities for envisioning and creating the future. They offer a platform for not incremental change, but a 10X revolution, which is what we need to make up for the lost time. Like the brave little hobbit, Frodo, in “The Lord of the Rings”, it is possible for a few to change the course of history. What is needed is a mix of vision and passion as we move into unchartered territory, equipped not with maps, but with a compass. Next Week: My Mental Model (continued) Related Entries: [All]

Many of my management classes (Iam a part-time student in Kellogg) have emphasized on this aspect of models. But, I should confess that I have not been convinced by this. I have always felt and also feel that thinking in terms of already developed models constrains our thinking process. I might be wrong in that by thinking without a model, we might actually be reinventing the wheel again and my thoughts might have been influenced by my laziness of memorizing things. |
Rajesh, I guess, for rural India, the solution could lie in: "the joint ownership of the product." Rather than reducing price per piece, we reduce the 'price of ownership for an individual.' To penetrate the hinterland with ICT products such as Simputer, iStation, Tabletpc, XYZ, you need to show the PoC (Proof of Concept) to the populace that it actually works and that it actually benefits them. One can not just 'plan' and 'think' that people in rural areas need these products. One has to actually test-market such products, and I can't think of a better model than joint (or Panchayati) ownership of such a device at a village (or 5-10 houses) level.
Its sort of like 'Fractional Ownership', a concept very popular in Aeroplanes. There also, the product is too expensive for a single person to buy, and hence people go for a joint ownership. Only the price point is different in two cases (Aeroplanes vs Rural Technology Products). But the point of similarity is that, at the respective price points, the product is too expensive for the customers in both sets! And thats why the potential of Fractional Ownership.
Posted by AJI quite agree with AJ, but dont we already have a succesful business model of sharing of computers: The cyber cafe. I feel the cyber cafe has some obvious and distinct advantages over shared ownership. The concept of cyber cafes has been very succesful in India and after the drop in internet access fees it has been attracting more number of users . The main reason why the cyber cafe concept has not penetrated deep into the rural areas of India is the sparse population of computer users.
I have observed even in the cities most students enrolled in multimedia, graphics and web development training programs dont own computers. Their needs cannot be met by the existing cyber cafe with 'plain vanilla' facilities where the systems are not powerful enough and the required softwares are not installed.
India needs the birth of a new generation cyber cafe concept to meet the growing demands of the vast population. This cyber cafes should be a total solutions centre for the average computer user and student population. They should be equipped with shared powerful processors, periperals like printers, scanners, digital cameras, softwares, video conferencing facilities etc. Another essential need is a technical books/manuals depository cum library for the benefit of students and professionals.
The key to the success of this business model in urban areas would be to provide very good facilities with capability to house large number of users. However for rural areas the model needs to be scaled down to suit the rural users' needs and economic conditions.
Posted by Rajan UrsRajesh (Urs): You are bang on. I also meant that you have to customize the ownership model according to the target customer.
Just as an aside, about urban markets cyber cafes, I dont know if you have seen Reliance WebWorld broadband connectivity gaming centers but if you haven't, just have a look at it sometime . Man, are they changing the face (concept) of 'cybercafes' in India or what!
Posted by AJThe latest announcement by BSNL offering additional phone line for internet access is ideal for setting up internet access kiosks. Anyone with a BSNL phone line can now get a second line and with a little investment can set up a kiosk with a single system. It could in the garden, on the roof top, in a school...
The vast number of public pay-phones in India can also be replaced with smart phones with mini LCD screens and internet access where one can send and recieve email in addition to the normal phone functions.
What we are seeing is a potential of gigantic proportions for India to take advantage of.
